Here is an alternative to hostels-stay in a 3/4-star hotel for the price of Motel 6. Priceline searches for the cheapest available hotel in your area of interest. Simply input location and how much money you are willing to pay. A friend of mine is staying in Mariot in the heard of Washington DC for $65 (regular price is something like $200).

I looove Priceline! Have been using it for over a year, and got hotels for as low as $50 for a 3.5-4 stars! AH-MAZING! Hotwire.com is also pretty good! Great tip :)
